Nighttime Skincare Tips

Our bodies need sleep and so does our skin. Follow these tips to help your skin look glowing and fresh in the morning.

1. Take off your makeup and wash your face
We touch our face all day, which makes our face one of the dirtiest parts of our body. Remove makeup so you stop the spread of acne bacteria and to have a clean palette for your nighttime products. “Sleeping in your makeup can result in unnecessary exposure to the free radicals in the environment, which the makeup holds on to,” says Dr. Schweiger. “Free radicals cause the breakdown of healthy collagen, which results in fine lines on the skin. Additionally, makeup can clog the pores while you sleep, resulting in the development of acne.” Try to wash your face as early as possible to cleanse your skin of bacteria that might have accumulated throughout the day as soon as possible.

2. Don't skip moisturizer
The skin's permeability is at its highest at night, which makes moisturizer use very important during nighttime.

3. Use repairing ingredients
During the day, we use products that protect our skin from the environment and sun. At night, we should use products that repair and regenerate the skin. Alpha and beta hydroxy acids such as glycolic, lactic, and salicylic acids can cause skin to be more susceptible to sun damage. Retinol should also be used at night as opposed to during the day since retinol and retinol derivatives encourage cell turnover which exposes skin.

4. Change pillowcases
Our pillowcases are a sneaky cause of acne! Oil and bacteria accumulate every time you use your pillow so clean your pillowcase as often as possible, especially if you're prone to breakouts.

5. Sleep with your head elevated
Keeping your head elevated reduces under eye puffiness by reducing fluid retention around your eyes.

6. Most importantly, get enough sleep
Not getting enough sleep is not only harmful for your body, but also your skin! Sleep reduces dark circles by keeping your circulatory system flowing smoothly. Lacking sleep causes stress, which may cause many skin issues including acne, psoriasis and eczema.
